When crafting an answer to this question, it is important that you perform a close reading of the text to consider ALL the different ways our author decides to have us think deeply about "the lesson".
For example when focusing on how the characters learn "the lesson", focus your close reading on plot, character dialogue/descriptions, and imagery.
When focusing on how we as readers learn "the lesson", focus your close reading on narration techniques, tone, and dialogue choices.
Guiding questions(used to help you, but you do not need to answer them directly): In what ways does the trip alienate Sylvia and the rest of the children? How does Sylvia react towards their trip into Manhattan and how does the trip affect her decision at the end of the story? How is this story told? What does this story teach me about societal equality or inequality? What is the difference between the character's reactions and my reactions as a reader?
